Bill Bonner’s Weird Week

Weirdness Prevails…   Van Bryan Jul. 28, 2019   As Bill says, our usual beat at the Diary is money… How it moves. Where it goes. And why. That mission was at the fore this week. As Bill puts it, when you mess with a society’s money, everything else gets a little squirrely… Perhaps it’s $640 toilet seats… a woman buying a car with Monopoly money… or even the “biggest single failure of weapons procurement in U.S. history.” Is it just us, Dear Reader? Or are things getting weirder out there? Congress Prepares for Battle The esteemed representatives of America’s Congress are girding their loins and sharpening their spears. They face the country’s greatest foes: financial calamity and shameful bankruptcy. Will the phalanx hold? Or will America’s congressional warriors rout? It’s the Era of Inflate or Die America’s central bank has created a monster. Years of negative real interest rates and EZ-money policies have inflated a bubble of epic proportions. And Bill fears that nobody… not Congress… not the White House… and certainly not the Fed… has the backbone to slay it.   Trump and Pelosi’s Abject Surrender Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi don’t agree on much. But this week, dear readers discovered what they do see eye to eye on: saddling future generations of Americans with crippling debt. Yes, the recent budget deal was pitched as a great win to the American...

On Genital Mutilation of Boys and Girls

Why the Religious Right Can’t Win Against Islam   Serban V.C. Enache Jul. 22, 2019   Before I explain why the Religious Right can’t win morally and legally against Islam, the reader has to understand what I mean by ‘Religious Right.’ I’m referring to the Jewish and Christian religious right. I’ll give a singular example, but a thoroughly relevant one. In 2017, Ilhan Omar [the Muslim Congresswoman who was given asylum to the US as a kid from Somalia] had mixed feelings regarding a bill in the Minnesota State House. The legislation would make it “a felony for parents to subject their daughters to the procedure [female genital mutilation] and calls for loss of custody and prison terms from five to 20 years, depending on the extent of the injuries,” with an increase in “penalties for those who perform the procedure.” Omar was quoted: “I don’t want us to create laws because we want to get into the media and because we want a flashy headline.” A back and forth between the members of Minnesota’s Civil Law committee can be found here. Nevertheless, Ilhan Omar agreed that the practice of female genital mutilation was “heinous” and voted for the bill. But the fate of that bill was counter-intuitive. The Republican-dominated State Senate in Minnesota rejected the legislation. Mind you, this bill against female genital mutilation was authored only by Republicans. Minnesota State...

Dollar and Gold and Crypto-Currencies

The World Is Dedollarizing Peter Koenig Jul. 19, 2019 What if tomorrow nobody but the United States would use the US-dollar? Every country, or society would use their own currency for internal and international trade, their own economy-based, non-fiat currency. It could be traditional currencies or new government controlled crypto-currencies, but a country’s own sovereign money. No longer the US-dollar. No longer the dollar’s foster child, the Euro. No longer international monetary transactions controlled by US banks and – by the US-dollar controlled international transfer system, SWIFT, the system that allows and facilitates US financial and economic sanctions of all kinds – confiscation of foreign funds, stopping trades between countries, blackmailing ‘unwilling’ nations into submission. What would happen? – Well, the short answer is that we would certainly be a step close to world peace, away from US (financial) hegemony, towards nation states’ sovereignty, towards a world geopolitical structure of more equality. We are not there yet. But graffities are all over the walls signaling that we are moving quite rapidly in that direction. And Trump knows it and his handlers know it – which is why the onslaught of financial crime – sanctions – trade wars – foreign assets and reserves confiscations, or outright theft – all in the name of “Make America Great Again”, is accelerating exponentially and with impunity. What is surprising is that the Anglo-Saxon...

The Leaning Tower of Debt

USAmerica Has Lost Its Plumb Line   Van Bryan Jul. 21, 2019   A plumb line, as dear readers learned this week, is a string with a heavy weight tied to the end. The plumb line was used in ancient times to know if a building was put up straight… or if it was crooked. The plumb line for America’s financial system went crooked long ago. Bill looks around and sees record-setting debt levels… more phony rate cuts… and “Inflate or Die” monetary policies. Yes, dear reader. The entire edifice leans precariously. Look out below… America’s Leaning Tower of Debt Will Topple Like a drunk stacking beer cans, America has gotten skilled at piling on its debt. With some $72 trillion in total debt, that pile has never been higher. But that tower is getting shaky. And somebody’s bound to bump into the coffee table eventually… How America Got Hooked on a Lie As Bill often says, people believe what they need to believe when they need to believe it. In America, investors believe a growing number of outrageous things: That meddling with rates will boost the economy… that more debt will make us more secure… that printing pieces of paper with green ink on them will make us richer. Too bad it’s a lie… all of it. What Would Happen If the Federal Reserve Did Nothing? The Fed doesn’t really know what...
