Russia in Syria

Russia’s Stand-Off Capability: The 800 Pound Gorilla in Syria   Andrei Martyanov Sep. 27, 2018   Size does matter and so does range and speed whenever anyone talks about weapons. It seems that there is a great deal of confusion which perpetuates itself in regards to a relatively small Russian military contingent in Syria. The most popular indicator of this confusion is a never ending discussion of a possible American attack on the Russian forces in Syria, primarily on the air base Khmeimim. Can such an attack, once one considers the size of forces US can deploy against Russians, succeed in “defeating” them? This is both a legitimate but also a highly unprofessional question. In fact, there are many people of prominence in the US who apart from considering such a terrifying scenario are actually pushing for it. Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Peters doesn’t mince words when it comes to attacking Russians; in fact, he is a very straight to the point guy when giving prescriptions on how to fight those Russians: This could spin out of control very, very fast. If it does, we have to win rapidly and decisively — and keep it within Syria. There is no doubt that Peters and the bunch of US military and political people he represents did partake in the strategic wisdom of the past, from Clausewitz to Moltke to Guderian, but it...

Warfare Rules

Two Rules of Warfare – 1) Never March on Moscow and 2) Never March on Moscow   The Saker Apr. 01, 2017   Nato Article 5 is a mutual suicide pact if enacted against Russia. How will that war be waged? Announce to the Russians that “Hey, we have Article 5 turned on, get ready for war?” Any war plan against Russian must begin with total surprise, total nuclear, EW, apocalyptic offensive. So, stick NATO and the Article 5 where the sun don’t shine. Bring me a war plan that attacks Russia that Russia loses and the attacker wins. I’ve asked for one for two years +. People talk but don’t think through the facts. Russia cannot be defeated. The world will end if Russia is attacked. (Unless it’s Ukies blind drunk desperately wanting to join their Heavenly Hundred. Then it will be a short firefight and no more Ukies. You can amass an armada, all the cruise missiles and all the tanks and armor you want, 5000 airplanes, bombers, attack planes, helo gunships, whatever. Russia will destroy the West and the Planet. Russia has just cut its military spending by 25%. You think they know they have enough defense or do you think they are idiots? NATO, now or in the future, will never cease to lose any war, anywhere. It is a pretend alliance. Basically, the power of the US is poised against whoever it wants to confront. Right...

War in Syria

A Stark Warning from Russia   The Saker Sep. 21, 2017   Something rather unprecedented just happened in Syria: US backed “good terrorist” forces attempted a surprise attack against Syrian government forces stationed to the north and northeast of the city of Hama.  What makes this attack unique is that it took place inside a so-called “de-escalation zone” and that it appears that one of the key goals of the attack was to encircle in a pincer-movement and subsequently capture a platoon of Russian military police officers deployed to monitor and enforce the special status of this zone.  The Russian military police forces, composed mainly of soldiers from the Caucasus region, fought against a much larger enemy force and had to call for assistance.  For the first time, at least officially, Russian special operations forces were deployed to rescue and extract their comrades.  At the same time, the Russians sent in a number of close air support aircraft who reportedly killed several hundred “good” terrorists and beat back the attack (Russian sources speak of the destruction of 850 fighters, 11 tanks, three infantry fighting vehicles, 46 armed pickup trucks, five mortars, 20 freighter trucks and 38 ammo supply points; you can see photos of the destroyed personnel and equipment here).  What also makes this event unique is the official reaction of the Russians to this event. Head of the...

USA

The Epic US Fail in Syria   “The Syrian defeat is not the result of a single operation, but an entire sequence of them, each resulting in what can only [be] described as an epic fail. The entire US Syrian campaign can be described as a relentless pursuit of failure.”   Dmitry Orlov Sep. 19, 2017 Back in 2007 I wrote Reinventing Collapse, in which I compared the collapse of the USSR to the forthcoming collapse of the USA. I wrote the following: “Let us imagine that collapsing a modern military-industrial superpower is like making soup: chop up some ingredients, apply heat and stir. The ingredients I like to put in my superpower collapse soup are: a severe and chronic shortfall in the production of crude oil (that magic addictive elixir of industrial economies), a severe and worsening foreign trade deficit, a runaway military budget and ballooning foreign debt. The heat and agitation can be provided most efficaciously by a humiliating military defeat and widespread fear of looming catastrophe.” (p. 2) A decade later these ingredients are all in place, with a few minor quibbles. The shortfall of oil is in the case of the US not the shortfall of physical oil but of money: against the backdrop of terminal decline of conventional oil in the US, the only meaningful supply increase has come from fracking, but it has been financially...
