No Western White Knight Coming to Ukraine’s Rescue

Article in Forbes admits Western leaders will not come to Ukraine’s rescue in conflict where Russia holds all the cards Alexander Mercouris 28/03/2016 As the political crisis in Kiev continues Forbes has published one of the most brutally frank and realistic appraisals of the Ukrainian conflict to appear in the Western media. That this article should appear in a US magazine that mainly addresses itself to the US business community is no surprise.  The degree of ideological conformity in Europe today makes it difficult to imagine such an article appearing in any of the leading journals in Germany, Britain or France. The article basically makes the same point we have always made: in a geopolitical contest in Ukraine between Russia and the West it will always be Russia that will in the end prevail because in Ukraine it is Russia which holds all the high cards. Quite simply, because of intense connections of geography, economics, culture, religion, language and history, Ukraine matters to Russia in ways it can never matter to the West so that Russia both can and will act to defend its interests there in ways that no Western state – not even the US – can ever do. The point has now been admitted by no less a person than President Obama himself.  Here is how The Atlantic reports his views: Obama’s theory here is simple: Ukraine is a core Russian interest...

Share of oil and gas in Russia’s tax revenue dropped to 21%…

…but the threatened devastation failed to materialize Jon Helevig 27.03.2016   We were being hammered with the message that Russia is nothing more “than a gas station masquerading as a country”. Russia’s economy was supposed to “be in tatters” once the oil revenue drained, for supposedly Russia produced nothing else. Well, now their dream of low oil prices have come true, but somehow it failed to materialize in the annihilation of Russia’s economy. The industry is intact, showing a slight growth of 1% for the two months of this year and having reported only a negligible decline of 3.4% for all of 2015.  Unemployment has persistently stayed at levels of 5.8%. The trade balance for the year was a whopping 46% of exports leaving $160 billion in Russia’s coffers. The imports are at historically low levels because Russia’s diversified economy now produces domestically most of what it consumes, as I reported earlier. The gold and currency reserves stand at 370 billion at the most recent bean count. Last week more cold water was poured on the Russia bashers as it was reported that the share of oil and gas in the country’s tax revenues had fallen to only 21% as per the situation at end of February. This is a far cry from the 50% that Western “experts” habitually claim that oil and gas account for.  Once more, this shows that...

Video: State Department Says Maybe Russia, Syrian Army Shouldn’t Take Palmyra From ISIS

(Zero Hedge) Sat, Mar 26, 2016 Originally appeared at Zero Hedge Last May, the world was horrified to learn that the band of marauding, black-flag waving, sword-wielding jihadist desert bandits we all know as the CIA-spawn called ISIS had overrun the ancient city of Palmyra. A UNESCO world heritage site, the city is known for its picturesque ancient ruins and boasts a rich cultural history that brings together Greek, Roman and Persian influences. The fear – well besides the worry that the militants might murder all the men and enslave the women and children – was that ISIS would destroy the city’s architectural treasures. Those fears were realized in October when reports indicated that the group had blown up the Triumphal Archs, a 2,000 year-old monument that dates back to the Roman empire. Here’s a drone flyover of the destruction: And a before/after contrast: “It’s a crime in every sense of the word,” Syria’s chief of antiquities said. “All we can do is share the sadness.” Yes, “a crime in every sense of the word,” but destroying the Arch wasn’t the only “crime” ISIS committed at the city’s vaunted ruins. The militants also put on a rather horrific (if morbidly epic) display in The Roman Theatre where city residents were forced to watch as two dozen teenage ISIS trainees carried out a mass execution of captured SAA soldiers. Right. So that’s all...
