How Russia’s Syria Deployment Is Changing the Military Balance in the Eastern Mediterranean

Deployment of very advanced weapons and electronic systems, as well as talk of Latakia air base being made permanent, challenges the US domination of the Eastern Mediterranean for the first time since the Second World War Daniel Fielding Tue, Nov 10, 2015 The Russians have provided more information about their deployment in Syria. They have confirmed that the Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters were delivered to Syria by heavy transport aircraft. These would have been the An-124 and Il-76 aircraft photographed at the base in Latakia. However it is now confirmed that the fighter and bomber aircraft flew there by themselves. It seems that some – and perhaps all – of the fighters and bombers came from Budyonnovsk air base in the Stavropol region – an area just north of the Caucasus in southern Russia. To reach Syria the aircraft must have flown over the Caspian Sea, Iran and Iraq. At an early stage in the construction of the Latakia air base the US acted to block Russian use of airspace over southern Europe so there was no other available route. The Su-34s have in flight air refuelling capability and the range with added fuel tanks to fly directly to Latakia from Budyonnovsk. The Su-30s and the Su-24s probably also have the same capability. The Su-25s however definitely do not. In other words the strike force not only flew over Iran and...

Seymour Hersh: Obama’s Entire Account Of bin Laden’s Death Is One Big Lie; This Is What Really Happened

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/11/2015   The last time famed US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh made news in the global media was with his massive, 5000-word expose from December of 2013 “Whose sarin?” revealing the true motives behind the Syrian near-war of 2013 including what we had said from the very beginning: the very professionally created YouTube clips showing the consequences of what was said to have been an Assad poison gas attack, were nothing but a fake (subsequent reports identified the propaganda source as Rami Abdul Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, whose entire operation has been funded by an unidentified European country.) Fast forward to today when in a report whose word count doubles his previous record for the London Review of Books, Hersh targets a topic near and dear to the hearts of many Americans: the story of the capture and death of Osama bin Laden. Or rather the completely false and, according to Hersh, fabricated story, one made up entirely by the US president and spoon fed for popular consumption with the aid of a Hollywood blockbuster whose entire plot line is, if Hersh is correct, one big lie as well. In a nutshell, and one really needs to read Hersh’s magnum opus as no amount of abbreviation will do it justice, Hersh accuses Obama of not only taking credit for the al Qaeda leader’s death, but fabricating...

Dilma Rousseff

Week Two of Russian Syria Campaign: Options for ISIS, US and Moscow

The Saker  (The Unz Review)  Mon, Oct 19, 2015  Originally appeared at The Unz Review   The Russian offensive in Syria is still very much in full swing and it is hard to make sense of what is really happening or how effective it has been. According to the Syrians, 40% of all the infrastructure of “Daesh” (meaning ISIS+al-Qaeda+all the hundreds of smaller groups fighting together against the Syrian government) has been destroyed. Russian sources are less enthusiastic and speak of a rather slow and hesitant Syrian offensive. So far, no major victory has been reported, but since all sides agree that the Russian air campaign is devastatingly effective and highly disruptive for Daesh, I think that there is a good probability that the Syrians will soon achieve a major success. If not, then the Iranians most definitely have the capability to truly tip the balance. So this might be a good time to look at what options Daesh will have. How Daesh can adapt to the new circumstances First, up until now, Daesh basically could move around at night with total impunity because the Syrian Air Force simply did not have the technology to detect and engage Daesh units at night. This has now changed since all the Russian aircraft (rotary and fixed wing) engaged in the current campaign are fully night capable. This is a major problem for Daesh which will now...
